Hierbas y especias

Frequently asked questions about Hierbas y especias

Where can I buy Redmond Real Salt?

Right here. We carry Redmond Real Salt, harvested from an ancient sea bed in Utah with nothing added or removed. Fine ground comes in a 26 oz shaker and 10 or 25 lb bags, kosher in 16 oz and 25 lb, plus coarse, popcorn and smoked Real Salt. Order online with free shipping over $99 to the lower 48 states, or pick it up at our store in Pullman, Michigan.

Where can I buy non-iodized salt?

We carry several. Our Sea Salt, Non-Iodized comes in 5 lb and 50 lb bags, with sea salt as the only ingredient. Redmond Real Salt has nothing added, so it isn't iodized either. Himalayan pink salt and Celtic sea salt are other popular uniodized choices. Salt with no added iodine or anti-caking agents is the usual choice for canning, pickling and fermenting, since those additives can darken or cloud brines.

What's the difference between Himalayan pink, Celtic, and black salt?

Himalayan pink salt is a rock salt with a pink color from its natural minerals. Celtic sea salt is a moist, grey sea salt. Himalayan black salt (kala namak) has a sulfur, egg-like flavor that's popular in tofu scrambles. It isn't the same as black Hawaiian salt, which is sea salt mixed with charcoal. We carry all four, alongside Redmond Real Salt.

Do you have tofu scramble seasoning and other plant-based seasonings?

Yes. Our own tofu scramble seasonings come in Classic, Smoked BBQ and Lemon Herb, or as a 3-pack, and Classic gets its eggy note from Himalayan black salt. For chicken-style flavor, McKay's Chicken Style and Beef Style seasonings come in 12 oz up to 100 lb. Our Organic Not Chicken Seasoning works as a rub or, stirred into water, as a broth. See Tofu Scramble Seasonings.

What sizes do you sell herbs and spices in?

Most single herbs and spices come in 1 lb (16 oz) bulk bags, with 2–4 oz sizes for things you use sparingly. Kitchen staples go bigger: Badia granulated garlic in 24 oz, 5.5 lb or 30 lb, Redmond Real Salt up to 25 lb, Red Star nutritional yeast up to 50 lb, and McKay's seasonings up to 100 lb. Businesses can buy through our wholesale site.

Are your herbs and spices organic?

Many are. About 50 of the herbs and spices we sell online are certified organic, including organic cumin, paprika and granulated onion from Oregon Spice Company, Frontier Co-op organic Ceylon and Vietnamese cinnamon, and our own Organic Not Chicken Seasoning. Look for "Organic" in the product name. We also carry conventional staples like Badia granulated garlic and smoked paprika at a lower price per ounce.

How long do bulk spices last, and how should I store them?

Dried spices rarely spoil; they slowly lose flavor. McCormick's guideline is 2–4 years for ground spices, about 4 for whole spices and 1–3 for leafy herbs, and salt keeps indefinitely. Store bulk spices airtight in a cool, dark, dry place away from the stove, and refill a small jar from the bag as you go. Find bags and containers in Food Storage.

What's the difference between your nutritional yeast flakes?

Red Star nutritional yeast is fortified with B vitamins, including B-12, and comes in 8 oz, 3 lb, 10 lb and 50 lb sizes. Our organic nutritional yeast flakes are certified organic and list a single ingredient: dried yeast. Both have a savory, cheesy flavor for popcorn, sauces and tofu scrambles. Compare them in Nutritional Yeast.
