Frequently asked questions about Lentejas

Where can I buy lentils?

Right here, online or in person. We stock six kinds of dry lentils: organic red split, green, French and beluga black lentils, plus conventional green and red split lentils. Order online and we'll ship them to your door. Our organic red split lentils are a good place to start, since they cook quickly.

Can I get lentils delivered?

Yes. We ship lentils anywhere in the lower 48 states, and most orders arrive in 5–7 business days by FedEx or USPS. Standard shipping is free on orders over $99, and there's no surcharge for heavy items, so 25 and 50 lb bags are welcome in your cart. Country Life+ members ($99/year) get free shipping on every order of any size.

How much do lentils cost?

Prices are listed on each product page and depend on the variety and bag size. Bigger bags cost less per pound: our organic green lentils, for example, cost much less per pound in the 25 lb bag than in the 1 lb bag. Our conventional green and red split lentils cost less than their organic versions, so they're the budget pick for big batches.

Can I buy lentils in bulk?

Yes. Every lentil we carry comes in a 25 lb bag, and our conventional green lentils also come in a 50 lb bag. The organic red split, green, French and beluga black lentils also come in 1 and 5 lb bags, so you can try a pound before stocking up. Our 25 and 50 lb sizes ship in paper bags, and the 5 lb and smaller sizes come in plastic bags.

Are your lentils organic?

Four of our six lentils are certified organic: red split, green, French and beluga black, and each of those product pages lists them as organic and non-GMO. We also carry conventional green and red split lentils, which are listed as non-GMO and cost less. Look for "Organic" in the product name, and check the Additional Information section on each page for details.

What's the difference between red, green, French and black lentils?

Split red lentils cook fast, typically in 15–20 minutes, and soften into soups, dals and curries. Green lentils are the all-purpose choice for soups, stews and salads. French green lentils have a deep green color, a mild earthy flavor and a firm texture that holds its shape in salads and side dishes. Beluga black lentils are small, with a rich, earthy flavor.

Are lentils gluten-free?

Lentils are naturally gluten-free, but ours are not certified gluten-free. Our 1 and 5 lb bags are packed in a facility that also handles wheat, along with nuts, peanuts, soy and sesame, so cross-contact is possible. If you need certified gluten-free foods, check the Additional Information section on each product page and look for "Certified Gluten-Free: YES."

Do lentils need to be soaked before cooking?

No. Colorado State University Extension notes that lentils don't need soaking, which makes them one of the quickest legumes to cook. Rinse them, pick out any small stones or debris, and simmer. Split red lentils are usually tender in 15–20 minutes, and whole green, French and black lentils take a bit longer, typically under an hour on the stovetop.
