Frutos Secos y Semillas

Frequently asked questions about Frutos Secos y Semillas

Where can I buy nuts and seeds in bulk?

Right here. We carry about 80 nuts, seeds and spreads, from snack-size bags to 25–55 lb bulk sacks, and many are certified organic. Order online for delivery to the lower 48 states. To narrow things down, browse just our nuts, or the seeds, sprouting seeds and nut butters pages.

Should I buy raw or roasted nuts and seeds?

It depends on how you'll use them. Raw, unroasted nuts and seeds are the choice for soaking, sprouting, nut milks and recipes where you'll toast them yourself. Roasted ones are ready to snack. We carry both, including no-salt roasted options like dry-roasted peanut halves, roasted cashews and roasted sunflower seeds, so you can control the salt.

What's the cheapest way to buy nuts and seeds?

Buy bigger bags. Our larger sizes generally cost less per pound than small bags, so a 5 or 25 lb bag stretches your budget if you use nuts and seeds often. Shipping helps too: standard shipping is free on orders over $99 to the lower 48, with no surcharge for heavy items. Country Life+ members ($99/year) get free shipping on every order of any size.

Where can I buy raw nuts and seeds for homemade granola?

We stock the usual granola add-ins in one place: raw organic sunflower seeds, pepitas, raw organic almonds, sliced almonds, walnut and pecan pieces, chia, flax and hulled hemp seeds. Buying 3 to 5 lb bags of your favorites makes regular batches easier and cheaper per pound, and the rest of your granola pantry, like oats, is a click away.

How should I store nuts and seeds?

Keep them in an airtight container away from heat and light. Nuts and seeds are rich in natural oils that can turn rancid with warmth, air and light, so the fridge or freezer keeps them fresh longer than the pantry, especially walnuts, pecans and ground flax. If you buy a 25 lb bag, portion it into smaller containers and freeze what you won't use soon. A sour smell means they've turned.

Is a seed a nut?

In the kitchen, "nuts" and "seeds" are loose categories. Botanically, many foods we call nuts, like Brazil nuts and cashews, are seeds, and peanuts are legumes. For allergies, the FDA lists tree nuts, peanuts and sesame as separate major food allergens. Our own bags are packed in a facility that also handles nuts, peanuts, soy, sesame and wheat, so read each label.

Do you sell sprouted nuts and seeds?

Yes, a few. Sprouted Seeds, Salted, Organic comes in 10 oz bags of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, or pumpkin and sunflower, plus 9 oz bags of seasoned-salt and sweet Thai chili pumpkin seeds. Want to sprout your own? Our sprouting seeds include alfalfa, broccoli, red clover, radish and mung beans.
