Frequently asked questions about Semillas germinadas

Where can I buy mung beans?

Right here. Our organic mung beans come in 1, 5 and 25 lb bags, and they're the classic bean for homemade bean sprouts as well as soups and dal. Order online for delivery to the lower 48 states. If you're sprouting, choose whole mung beans; our split, peeled yellow mung dal is meant for cooking.

Are your sprouting seeds organic?

Nearly all of them. Our alfalfa, broccoli, red clover, radish, mung bean, lentil, black oil sunflower and buckwheat seeds are certified organic and listed as non-GMO, and the High Mowing sprouting blends are organic too. The one exception is NOW Zesty Sprouting Mix, which isn't labeled organic. Each product page lists the details under Additional Information.

What are the best seeds for sprouting?

It depends on the flavor you like. Alfalfa is mild and quick, sprouting in three to seven days. Radish sprouts are zesty, broccoli sprouts are mildly spicy and nutty, red clover is earthy, and mung beans give you classic crunchy bean sprouts. For variety in one bag, try a High Mowing organic blend like Spring Salad Mix, or NOW Zesty Sprouting Mix (crimson clover, fenugreek and radish).

How do I sprout seeds in a jar?

Put about 2 tablespoons of seeds in a sprouting jar with three times as much water and soak overnight. Drain, then rinse and drain twice a day, keeping the jar out of direct sun. Around day four, move it to indirect sunlight so the leaves turn green. Those are the directions on our NOW Zesty Sprouting Mix; timing varies by seed, and sprouting may fail above 80°F with high humidity.

Can I sprout black oil sunflower seeds and buckwheat in a jar?

Not these two. Our organic black oil sunflower seeds and organic unhulled buckwheat are meant to be grown as microgreens on a thin layer of soil, not sprouted in water. Black oil sunflower seeds come in 10 oz, 5 lb and 50 lb sizes, and buckwheat for sprouting comes in 1, 5 and 25 lb bags.

Are homegrown sprouts safe to eat raw?

Raw sprouts carry a food-safety risk, because the warm, humid conditions that sprout seeds also suit bacteria, and homegrown sprouts aren't safer than store-bought. FoodSafety.gov advises children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a weakened immune system to eat sprouts only when cooked. Everyone else should keep sprouts refrigerated and toss any that smell musty or look slimy.
