About Flour & Mixes

Flour from a family store since 1960

Country Life Natural Foods carries nearly 40 flours and baking mixes for bread, pastry, pancakes and gluten-free baking. Home bakers, bakeries and big families stock up here, and like everything in our store, each one meets our family's rule: we don't sell what we won't eat.

What you'll find

  • Wheat flours — organic whole wheat, whole wheat pastry and Gold N White with germ, Bob's Red Mill organic unbleached all-purpose, and Wheat Montana's unbleached white, Bronze Chief and Prairie Gold.
  • Ancient and specialty grains — organic einkorn, spelt and white spelt, Kamut khorasan, dark rye, barley and 6-grain flour, plus Bob's Red Mill semolina.
  • Gluten-free blends and flours — Bob's Red Mill 1-to-1 and All Purpose gluten-free blends, sorghum, teff and chickpea flour.
  • Grain, nut and root flours — brown rice, millet, oat, buckwheat, quinoa, soy, almond meal, cassava, tapioca and potato flour.

Frequently asked questions about Flour & Mixes

Where can I buy einkorn flour?

Right here. We carry two organic einkorn flours in 32 oz bags: an all-purpose einkorn flour and a whole wheat einkorn flour. If you'd rather mill your own, our organic einkorn berries come in 1, 5, 25 and 50 lb bags. Einkorn is an ancient wheat with a mild, nutty flavor. It does contain gluten, and Beyond Celiac advises people with celiac disease to avoid it. Shop our whole wheat einkorn flour.

Where can I buy flour in bulk online?

Right here at Country Life Natural Foods. We sell nearly 40 flours and baking mixes online, and many come in 25 or 50 lb bags for serious bakers. Bulk favorites include organic whole wheat flour (5, 25 or 50 lb), organic Gold N White flour with germ (5, 25 or 50 lb) and Wheat Montana's unbleached white flour (10 or 50 lb). Bob's Red Mill retail packs let you try something new first. Start with our organic whole wheat flour.

Do you sell organic flour in bulk?

Yes. About half of our flours are organic, and many come in 25 lb bags or larger. Choose organic whole wheat, whole wheat pastry, Gold N White with germ, Bob's Red Mill unbleached white all-purpose (5 or 25 lb), spelt, white spelt, dark rye, barley, buckwheat, brown rice, millet, soy, 6-grain, oat flour (5 or 50 lb) and Kamut khorasan (25 lb). See our organic Gold N White flour.

Do you sell natural, unbleached flour?

Yes. Our white flours are unbleached: Wheat Montana's Natural Premium Unbleached White Flour (10 or 50 lb), roller milled for artisan-style bread and enriched with niacin, iron and B vitamins; Bob's Red Mill organic unbleached all-purpose flour; and organic Gold N White, which keeps the wheat germ and has no bleach, bromates or preservatives. For the least processed option, choose a whole-grain flour or mill your own from our wheat berries.

What gluten-free flours do you carry?

For labeled gluten-free baking, we carry Bob's Red Mill 1-to-1 Baking Flour (22 oz, 64 oz or 25 lb), All Purpose Gluten-Free Flour (44 oz or 25 lb), and gluten-free sorghum, teff and chickpea flours. We also stock flours that are naturally free of wheat, like organic brown rice, millet, tapioca, potato flour and almond meal. Those aren't certified gluten-free, so choose the labeled ones if you need certainty. Try 1-to-1 Baking Flour.

Do you carry Wheat Montana flour?

Yes. We stock three Wheat Montana flours in 10 and 50 lb bags: Natural Premium Unbleached White Flour, Bronze Chief whole wheat flour, milled from hard red wheat, and Prairie Gold whole wheat flour, made from hard white spring wheat. Bronze Chief and Prairie Gold are both labeled Certified Glyphosate Free and Non-GMO. Prairie Gold bakes up lighter in color and milder than Bronze Chief. Shop Prairie Gold flour.

Which flour should I use for bread, pastries or pasta?

For yeast breads, pick a flour from hard wheat, such as Bronze Chief (hard red) or Prairie Gold (hard white spring), and add a little of our 75% protein gluten flour, also called vital wheat gluten, for extra structure. For cakes, cookies and pie crusts, organic whole wheat pastry flour is milled from lower-protein soft wheat. Bob's Red Mill semolina is the classic pasta flour, and our organic 6-grain flour makes hearty, nutty bread. See our whole wheat pastry flour.

How should I store flour?

Keep flour sealed in an airtight container somewhere cool and dry. Whole-grain flours like whole wheat, rye and spelt contain the oil-rich germ, so they keep best cold. University of Georgia Extension says whole wheat flour keeps one to three months at room temperature, about six months in the refrigerator and up to 12 months in the freezer. Buying a 25 or 50 lb bag? Divide it into smaller containers and freeze what you won't use soon.
