About Seeds

Seeds from a family store since 1960

Seeds are some of the hardest-working foods in a whole-foods pantry. They top salads and oatmeal, go into breads and granola, and blend into smoothies and dressings. Country Life Natural Foods has been family-run since 1960, and we still live by one rule: we don't sell what we won't eat.

What you'll find

  • Pumpkin & sunflower — organic and conventional pepitas; raw and roasted sunflower seeds
  • Chia & flax — organic chia, organic brown and golden flax, conventional golden flax
  • Sesame & poppy — natural, hulled white, black and tri-color sesame; blue poppy seeds
  • Hemp & more — hulled hemp seeds, organic amaranth and organic fenugreek
  • Sprouted & sprouting — salted organic sprouted seeds, plus alfalfa, broccoli, clover and radish seeds for growing sprouts

Frequently asked questions about Seeds

Where can I buy pepitas?

Right here. We sell Pepitas (Pumpkin Seeds), raw and shell-free, in 10 oz, 5 lb, 25 lb and 50 lb sizes, plus organic pepitas in 10 oz, 5 lb and 27.5 lb sizes. Order online for delivery to the lower 48 states. Toast them for snacking, add them to trail mix and granola, or blend them into sikil pak, a pumpkin seed dip.

Are pepitas the same as pumpkin seeds?

Pepitas are pumpkin seeds without the shell: the tender green seed inside. Ours are sold shell-free, so they're ready to eat, toast or bake. Our conventional pepitas list Mexico as the country of origin, and our organic pepitas list China and are steam-treated to keep microbial levels low, as noted on each product page.

Can I buy flax seed in bulk?

Yes. Organic brown flax and organic golden flax come in 1, 5 and 25 lb bags, and conventional golden flax comes in 5 and 25 lb. Golden flax has a lighter, slightly sweet, buttery flavor; brown is nuttier. For a vegan egg replacer, mix 1 tablespoon of ground flax with 3 tablespoons of water and let it thicken about 5 minutes. Flax may contain traces of mustard seed.

Where can I buy sunflower seeds in bulk for eating?

We carry snacking and baking sunflower seeds four ways: raw organic (1, 5 and 25 lb), raw conventional (1, 5 and 50 lb), roasted and salted (1, 5 and 25 lb), and roasted with no salt (5 and 25 lb). The black oil sunflower seeds in our sprouting section are unhulled and meant for growing microgreens, not for snacking.

What's the difference between hulled and natural sesame seeds?

Natural sesame seeds keep their hulls, so they're crunchier and slightly more bitter. Hulled seeds are white and milder, and they're the better choice for sweet baking. We carry organic and conventional natural and hulled white sesame in sizes from 1 lb up to 50 or 55 lb, plus black sesame and a 5 oz organic tri-color blend. Blend sesame with water to make your own tahini.

Do you sell chia seeds in bulk?

Yes. Our organic chia seeds come in 1, 5 and 25 lb bags and are listed as organic and non-GMO, with Paraguay as the country of origin. Chia needs no cooking: stir it into oatmeal, yogurt or smoothies, make chia pudding, or use 1 tablespoon with 3 tablespoons of water as an egg replacer in baking.

What are hulled hemp seeds?

Hulled hemp seeds, also called hemp hearts, are the soft inner part of the hemp seed with the hard shell removed. They have a mild, nutty flavor and need no cooking: sprinkle them on salads and fruit, or blend them into smoothies, sauces and dips. We carry organic (10 oz, 3 lb, 25 lb and 50 lb) and conventional (1 lb, 3 lb, 25 lb and 50 lb), both from Canada.
