About Beans

Beans from a family store since 1960

Dry beans are one of the most economical whole foods you can keep in the pantry, and most of the beans we stock are certified organic. Country Life Natural Foods has been family-run since 1960, and we still live by one rule: we don't sell what we won't eat.

What you'll find

  • Everyday organic beans — pinto, black turtle, garbanzo (chickpeas), navy, Great Northern, dark and light red kidney, small red
  • Specialty beans — adzuki, cranberry, baby lima, soy, mung and mung dal, plus bolita and mayocoba
  • Peas — organic green and yellow split peas, whole green peas and black-eyed peas
  • Conventional bulk — pinto, black turtle, navy and dark red kidney beans in 5 and 50 lb bags
  • Soup starter — Country Life organic Bean Soup Mix, seven beans and grains in one bag

Frequently asked questions about Beans

Where can I buy organic dried beans in bulk?

Right here. We carry nearly 20 organic dry beans and peas, including pinto, black turtle, garbanzo, navy, Great Northern, kidney, adzuki and cranberry beans. Most come in 1, 5 and 25 lb bags, and organic garbanzos also come in a 50 lb bag. We ship to the lower 48 states, free on orders over $99. Our organic pinto beans are a good place to start.

Are cannellini beans the same as white kidney beans?

Yes. Cannellini is the Italian name for the white kidney bean, a large, creamy white bean that's classic in minestrone, pasta e fagioli and white bean dips. We sell dry Cannellini Beans, White Kidney in 1, 5 and 50 lb bags, and Cadia organic cannellini beans in 15 oz cans if you'd rather skip the soaking.

Do you offer free shipping on bulk beans?

Yes. Standard shipping is free on orders over $99 to the lower 48 states, and there's no surcharge for heavy items, so 25 and 50 lb bags of beans qualify like everything else. Most orders arrive in 5–7 business days by FedEx or USPS. If you order often, Country Life+ membership ($99/year) adds free shipping on every order of any size.

Are your dried beans non-GMO?

Our organic beans are certified organic, and USDA organic rules don't allow genetically engineered seeds or ingredients. For conventional beans, each product page lists Non-GMO status under Additional Information, and it varies by item, so check the page before you order. If non-GMO matters most to you, choose a bean with "Organic" in its name.

Do I need to soak dried beans before cooking?

Soaking is optional, but it shortens cooking time. Colorado State University Extension suggests soaking beans in plenty of water for several hours or overnight (refrigerate if it's longer than 12 hours), or a quick soak: boil for 3 minutes, then let them stand off the heat for 1 hour. Drain and rinse before cooking. Lentils don't need soaking.

How long do dried beans take to cook?

Most beans take 1–3 hours on the stovetop, or 6–8 hours on low in a slow cooker, according to Colorado State University Extension. Red kidney beans need extra care: the FDA advises soaking them, then boiling them in fresh water for at least 30 minutes, and not cooking them from dry in a slow cooker, which may not get hot enough.

Do you sell canned or instant beans?

Yes, for nights when there's no time to soak. Cadia organic beans come in 15–16 oz cans: black, pinto, garbanzo, Great Northern, cannellini, red kidney, chili beans, lentils and two refried beans. Our instant pinto and black beans are precooked and dehydrated: stir in boiling water, let stand about 10 minutes and season. They come in 10 oz, 5 lb and larger bags.
