Spelt Berries, Organic, Grains - Country Life Natural Foods

Organic spelt berries are ancient grains cultivated for thousands of years, thanks to their pure goodness!

Organic spelt berries have a hard outer shell and a nutty flavor. They are a good source of protein, fiber, and minerals, making them a healthy, nutritious addition to any diet.

We love that organic spelt berries are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This means that they are better for the environment and our hungry tummies!

In addition to being organic, spelt berries are also a good option for those with gluten sensitivities. While spelt does contain gluten, it is a different type of gluten than that found in modern wheat.

Some people with gluten sensitivities may be able to tolerate spelt better than other grains. However, those with celiac disease should still avoid spelt as it contains gluten and can cause harmful reactions.

Use spelt berries to make a hearty addition to stuffings, soups, salads, pilafs and a substitute for rice (even risottos!)

While we pack each order with care to minimize seam breakage, the stitching is fragile on the 25# bags and may burst open during transit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does organic grain need to be frozen to kill eggs?
Yes, because organic grains such as spelt, einkorn, or kamut are not sprayed with any type of pesticides, the grain should be frozen to kill insect eggs. Freezing is a safe and effective optional step. If you want to ensure there are no dormant insect eggs (common in all whole grains), place the sealed package in the freezer for a minimum of 7-10 days after purchase. This kills any potential eggs or larvae without affecting the grain’s quality or nutrition. After freezing, store the grains in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. Alternatives to freezing include the use of diatomaceous earth and/or oxygen absorbers.
How should I store spelt berries for long-term freshness?
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place. For long-term storage, refrigeration or freezing in airtight containers helps preserve freshness and prevent pests.
Are spelt berries gluten-free?
No. Spelt contains gluten, so it’s not suitable for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
Can I grind spelt berries into flour?
Yes. Use a grain mill or high-powered blender to make fresh spelt flour for baking.
How long do cooked spelt berries last?
Store cooked spelt berries in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Are organic spelt berries better than conventional ones?
Organic spelt berries are grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, which many consumers prefer for purity and sustainability reasons.

Very Satisfied

My first time ordering online...it went well, and order arrived quickly, intact. Haven't used spelt before, but have used the other ingredients I ordered...

Grinds easily

Some grains are hard to grind such as rye. I grind spelt with rye and it makes it easier. According to the late Leonard Ridzon, spelt is one of the only grains with positive ions, which means less plant toxins. I still soak all my coarse ground spelt at least overnight and it breaks down the bran and you don’t even notice it, so you can get away with grinding it only once.

Great experience

I first heard of your company through The Biblical Nutritionists. I was thrilled that you are a Christian company. When I saw your price I was even more thrilled. I am new to the world of milling and biblical cooking, but you’ve made it that much easier.

Spelt Berries

These spelt berries are amazing! I recently decided I wanted to start making our own flour and after some research I chose to go with these organic spelt berries. I haven't put the flour to the test yet, but just by its texture I know it'll work great!

Grown and processed in Michigan - yay!

I bought this because it is grown and processed in Michigan, my state. Country Life had informed me that it is presently the only such grain they carry. I found it to be very clean and, of course, organic. The reason i give it four stars rather than five is the expense. I had previously been buying organic whole wheat, which is less expensive and which serves me just as well, but the only Michigan farmer i was aware of who had grown that had recently retired.
