Frequently asked questions about Food Storage

Where can I buy bag ties?

Right here. We sell 3.5" twist bag ties in 2,000-count packs. Paper ties come in blue, yellow, white, red, green, orange and a red candy stripe. Plastic ties come in green, red, orange, yellow, white, blue and black. They're handy for bread, produce, bulk bins and sandwich or treat bags. See Paper Bag Ties.

Do you have candy-stripe bag ties?

Yes. Our 3.5" paper bag ties come in a Red Candy Stripe color, 2,000 ties per pack. They're popular for closing cello treat bags, cookie bags and holiday gifts, and the same ties work for bread and bulk foods the rest of the year. If you want a solid color instead, choose from blue, yellow, white, red, green or orange. See Paper Bag Ties.

What is the best way to store grains and beans long-term?

Pack them in a Mylar bag with an oxygen absorber, seal the bag, and set it inside a food-grade pail with a lid. Mylar blocks light, moisture and oxygen, and the bucket keeps out pests and protects the bag. Store your pails somewhere cool, dry and dark, since heat and humidity shorten storage life the most. We carry every piece: Mylar bags, oxygen absorbers, 1- and 5-gallon pails and Gamma Seal lids.

Can I store your 25 or 50 lb bags as they arrive?

Not for long-term storage. Our larger bulk sizes ship in paper bags, which aren't airtight and won't keep out moisture or pests over time. 5 lb bags and pouch sizes come in plastic bags, which are fine for the pantry but aren't oxygen barriers either. To store bulk food for the long haul, repack it into Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers inside a sealed pail.

What size Mylar bags do you sell for grain storage?

We sell 5.4 mil Mylar bags in two sizes: 1 gallon (10" x 14" x 4") and 5 gallon (18" x 28"). The 5-gallon bag lines a 5-gallon pail, and the 1-gallon bag is good for smaller batches or a 1-gallon pail. Add a 2000cc oxygen absorber to each 5-gallon bag or a 500cc absorber to each 1-gallon bag, then heat-seal. See Mylar Bags.

What is a polyethylene bag?

A polyethylene bag is a clear, flexible plastic bag made from polyethylene, the same food-safe plastic used for most bulk-food and produce bags. Ours are 2 mil bags, sold 100 to a pack in four sizes: 4x2x8, 4x2x12, 6x3x15 and 8x4x18 inches. They're good for portioning bulk foods, and our bag ties close them. See Polyethylene Bags.

What are Food Huggers?

Food Huggers are reusable silicone food savers that replace plastic wrap and single-use bags. We carry the Food Huggers Hugger Bag in 13 oz, made from 100% FDA food-grade silicone. It's dishwasher, freezer and microwave safe, and it's great for cut produce, snacks and leftovers. See Food Huggers.

Do you charge extra to ship heavy buckets and storage supplies?

No. There's no surcharge for heavy or bulky items, so 5-gallon pails ship at normal rates. That's true even if you pair them with 50 lb bags of grain to fill them. Standard shipping is free on orders over $99 to the lower 48 states, and most orders arrive in 5–7 business days by FedEx or USPS.
